Apr 11, 2014 /prREACH/ -- The Lois Merrill Foundation (LMF) is happy to announce that it will now accept Bitcoin as part of their fundraising efforts.  LMF is a non-profit organization founded in 2007 in honor of Lois Merrill who passed away in 2006 from carcinoid cancer, a rare neuroendocrine cancer. Lois was a devoted wife and school teacher whose passion for life and sincere desire to help others lives on through The LMF.

LMF branded items such as t-shirts, and posters, will now be available for sale on BitDazzle, a Bitcoin marketplace. Customers will have the option to pay via bitcoin when they check out. If they don’t have Bitcoins, Bitdazzle will help them sign up for a Coinbase account.

Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer payment system and digital currency introduced as open source software in 2009 by developer Satoshi Nakamoto. It is a cryptocurrency, because it uses crytopgraphy to control the creation and transfer of money. Conventionally, the capitalized word “Bitcoin” refers to the technology and network, whereas the lowercase “bitcoin” refers to the currency itself.

LMF hopes that by expanding their merchandizing to Bitcoin, they will reach a new level of advanced consumers who are using this new currency. LMF also hopes to increase awareness of the Lois Merrill Foundation. The mission of the LMF is to help people affected by carcinoid and other rare cancers through funding research for new treatments, providing financial support for patients and their families and promoting awareness and education.

LMF Board Member Carol Livingston states, “As Bitcoin continues to evolve and the public gains understanding of how easy it is to use as a form of currency, it becomes increasingly important to explore new avenues to use it. We think offering Bitcoin as a vehicle for making charitable contributions represents a very natural progression for Bitcoin.” Livingston continues, “BitDazzle believes that to be forefront of this evolution is new and exciting and are happy to be working with the Lois Merrill Foundation to raise awareness of carcinoid cancer”.
