Nov 27, 2015 /prREACH/ -- Hot Tub Super Center of Rocklin, CA, a Sacramento area Swim Spas and Hot Tubs Dealer shares “Three Important Tips for Diabetics.”

“November is National Diabetes Month,” said William Long of Hot Tub Super Center. “The program is focused on educating people about the disease and giving them helpful tips and tools to avoid it, or prevent it from getting worse.” Here are 3 important tips for diabetics.

Know Sugar Sources - While this is a diet tip, it is one that isn’t addressed often enough. It is important to know that granulated sugar, like what people put in coffee or sprinkle on cereal, etc, is not the only source of glucose (sugar) that is dangerous for diabetics.

Most people are aware that there is sugar in certain types of foods and drinks. They are aware that sugary sodas, and cakes are not good for them, but they may not be aware of what other foods contain sugars that aren’t as obvious. Knowing what foods convert into sugar is important, and will help people make better decisions on what to eat or drink.

Fatty foods can raise blood sugar, and so can caffeinated drinks like coffee even if no sugar is added to them. Vegetables are normally a great choice, but there are a few that are high in starch that turns into sugar in the blood. Those vegetables do more harm than good and should be avoided.

Some of the starchy veggies include: corn, sweet peas, potatoes and butternut squash. It is a good idea to stay away from any foods high in carbohydrates like rice, bread and pastas as well. A lot of advice teaches to avoid white varieties of those types of carbs, but even wheat bread and brown rice should play a limited role in a diabetic diet.

Check all Medications - When first diagnosed with diabetes, or a pre-diabetic condition, the first response should be to ask the doctor if any existing medications will counteract diabetes medications, or make blood sugar go up. Some examples of medications that are problematic for diabetics include: beta blockers, cortisone and diuretics.

Relieve Stress - It is really hard to avoid stress. Most people encounter stressful situations daily whether it is at work, at school, sitting in traffic or just paying bills at home. Stress, even the type caused by excitement and exhilaration is tough on the body, and even tougher on a diabetic’s body. Find ways to reduce stress every day. Adding a Sacramento hot tub to the yard is a great way to relieve stress and provide an enjoyable retreat for friends and family.
