Firstat Nursing Services, a La Jolla home health and San Diego home care agency shares “Three Ways to Help Seniors Get the Most Out of the New Year”.
“New Year’s is a good time to remember that senior citizens in the family have special needs that require help from loved ones,” said Linnea Goodrich, president of Firstat Nursing Services in San Diego, CA. “Helping the older members of the family live happier, healthier lives can be a good New Year’s resolution, and they aren’t even as hard to keep as most common vows.”
Here are three ways to help the senior citizens in the family get the most out of the New Year and live healthier, happier lives.
Let Loved Ones Know it is Okay to Complain – People don’t like to impose on others. That is especially true of senior loved ones. The people that matter most may not be letting their families know when they are feeling down, depressed or scared. Make sure elderly family members know that it is okay to speak up and let others know when they are having problems.
Depression is one of the most serious mental health issues seniors have. It is compounded by the feelings of helplessness and isolation that often accompany getting older and children moving on with their own lives. Of course, parents want their kids to go and have good lives, but children need to remember that for decades, they were their parents’ entire life, and now they are alone.
Encourage parents or older siblings to call or visit often. Get out and check on them if they aren’t able to travel easily. Let them know that they should call family, friends or their regular physician if they feel anxious, scared, depressed, can’t eat or are sleeping too much.
Keep Senior’s Mentally Active – While physical movement is important to keep muscles from getting weaker, mental workouts are just as important. Seniors, especially those who live alone, can become so isolated they have no interaction with other people, and that increases the likelihood of dementia and other memory problems.
Encourage older loved ones to engage in mental activities such as playing word games, or if they are able to get out, joining a social group in their community. Even people who live a distance away can make sure they communicate with their older loved ones regularly to keep them mentally active and also to give them a feeling of support and love.
Get Help From a La Jolla Home Health Agency – Everyday chores and health needs are difficult for senior citizens, and as they get older, they need help to keep up with what seems like even simple tasks. When there isn’t enough help around, they often go without eating properly, they may not clean up regularly, or keep up with doctor appointments.
Having a parent or older family member move in to a nursing home is scary, and it can be hard on existing families to have them come and stay with them as well. It is frustrating for families who do not live close to senior loved ones, and sometimes exhausting for those who do. Hiring a home health agency is an excellent answer to the most frustrating problems, and helps seniors live in their own homes comfortably and happily.
