Dec 29, 2014 /prREACH/ -- “Currently, in New York City, buildings account for nearly three-quarters of the City’s emissions. With a firm commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent below 2005 levels by 2050, Mayor Bill de Blasio is spearheading an effort to become the largest city in the world to commit to an “80 by 50” goal,” says Jeff Carleton, president of Carleton Energy Consulting.

The “New York City Carbon Challenge” is ambitious, tasking building owners to take proactive steps towards reducing the city’s building-based GHG emissions 30 percent by 2025.

Public and Private Support - The target is indeed aspiring, but since 2007, scores of buildings, both public and private have accepted the challenge, taking tremendous strides towards the Mayor’s goal. Currently, 17 of New York City universities, 11 hospitals, 12 global companies and 17 residential management firms have agreed to voluntarily reduce their building-based emissions by 30 percent or more in ten years. In addition, 40 Broadway theatres have actively engaged in a variety of sustainability projects through the Broadway Green Alliance.

A Work In Progress - Since the Challenge was implemented, there has been significant progress citywide in meeting the Mayor’s expectations. While some businesses have already met the goal, others are making progress. Taken collectively, participants have cut their annual emissions by 190,392 metric tons of carbon, saving $174 million annually in lower energy costs. And by program end, the City projects to reduce emissions by nearly 600,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent to nearly 1.5 percent of total citywide emissions.
