Jul 24, 2017 /prREACH/ -- It’s normal to hear the words “car accident” and immediately think of numerous cars, crushed and mangled, on the roadway. But sometimes, accidents only involve one car. Just recently, a court in Montgomery County, PA sentenced a man to 1 ½ to 3 years in prison for the role he played in a fatal accident which only involved the car he was driving.
On October 4th, 2015, the then 21-year-old man was at Schuylkill Canal Park with three others when they got into his station wagon to leave. He started to back up to maneuver the car in a different direction but failed to pay attention to how close the car was to the embankment. The tires went over the side of the embankment, pulling the rest of the vehicle over and flipping it right into the canal. The car landed on its roof, placing all of the occupants in four feet of water upside down.
The driver and one of the passengers were able to escape but the other two passengers drowned. They were only 25 and 29-years-old.
As part of their investigation, the police had the driver undergo a toxicology test which showed that he was drunk and high on marijuana at the time of the accident. He was charged with driving while under the influence and two counts of homicide.
While the families of the victims may feel that justice has been served, the guilty verdict won’t help them obtain any sort of compensation for their losses. However, they may be able to pursue a car accident lawsuit which may provide them with compensation for funeral and burial expenses, lost wages, loss of consortium, and more. Studies have shown that these plaintiffs are much more likely to obtain a successful verdict or settlement if they work with an experienced attorney who can assist them with obtaining evidence, filing paperwork, and fighting for their rights in court.
