Although Ian Thomson was born in London in 1961, he grew up in New York, where his father worked as a banker. He returned to England for university and received his degree from Pembroke College, Cambridge. During the 1980s, he found work in Rome as a teacher, translator, journalist and writer. As well as working on his books, Thomson is a current contributor to national broadsheets and weekly magazines, such as the Observer, Times Literary Supplement and the Spectator.

Ian Thomson's first consequential book, "Bonjour Blanc: A Journey Through Haiti," was listed for the Thomas Cook Travel Award. He spent 10 years writing the biography of Primo Levi: "Primo Levi: A Life," a book for which he won the Royal Society of Literature's W.H.Heinemann Award. His 2005 book, "The Dead Yard: Tales of Modern Jamaica," banned in that country for political reasons, received the Royal Society of Literature's Ondaatje Prize and the Dolman Travel Book Award. Published in 2019, his most recent work, "Dante's Divine Comedy," encompasses his lifelong passion for Italy. Today, he is hard at work on a book about his mother's birthplace, the Baltic region, during World War II.
