Wees suggests certain product sourcing rules to help e-commerce sellers find suppliers. The first is to be familiar with the product manufacturing process to have productive conversations with suppliers. Second, start conversations with suppliers by discussing their business, factory, location, export license, number of employees, etc., and finally, vetting suppliers by talking to them, checking their business license, finding out how long they've been in business and checking supplier blacklists online.
- The blog also outlines six alternative methods of finding suppliers:
- Make use of online repositories such as Alibaba, Global Sources, India Mart, Thomasnet, Mfg.com and 1688
- Platforms like Importyeti.com, panjiva.com and software, such as Zonguru and Helium10 and can be used for reverse sourcing of suppliers of competing products
- Learn the product’s manufacturing process and conduct a Google search to find suppliers that have websites
- Seeking referrals from existing trusted suppliers
- Registering for trade shows that can be attended online for free
- Seeking help from sourcing agents and agencies
