Invisalign represents some of the latest technology in the dental industry that is quickly becoming one of the most popular orthodontic treatments among patients, particularly adults. Insivalign aligners act as clear braces, and are soft, clear plastic trays that fit snugly over the teeth. When worn, Invsalign aligners are nearly invisible and they can be removed at any time.
Invisalign uses some of the latest computer 3D imaging technology to create a series of clear plastic aligners that the patient switches out approximately every two weeks. These aligners are designed to gradually shift the teeth into position using different forces than conventional braces, which means less discomfort for patients as well. Treatment time varies according to the severity of the patient’s gapping, crowding, or misalignment, but can be as short as just a few months.
During treatment, patients are instructed to wear their aligners 22 hours per day, removing them while eating or drinking anything other than water. The removable nature of the aligners makes it easier to patients to brush and floss their teeth during the course of treatment, unlike conventional braces that require special products for proper brushing the flossing. Additionally, patients have the flexibility to remove their aligners for special occasions such as business meetings, presentations, photographs, reunions, dates, and more.
While Invisalign isn’t designed to treat severe orthodontic issues, it has proven to be effective in treating mild to moderate gapping, crowding, misalignment, underbites, overbites, and crossbites. Invisalign can also be significantly less expensive than conventional braces due to the fact that less office visits are needed during treatment.
