Each year, millions of adults in America lose permanent teeth due to injury, decay, smoking, or failing teeth as a result of poor health. Although bridges and dentures have been a traditional method of restoring function after tooth loss, these methods still leave the patient prone to bone resorption and gum recession in areas of the mouth with missing teeth. Dental implants consist of a small titanium stud, or screw, that is implanted into the jawbone and an artificial porcelain crown that is attached to the stud. The dental implant procedure is completed by first surgically implanting the titanium screw into the jawbone of the patient where they have experienced tooth loss. The titanium material is given several months to heal and bond with the jawbone, after which the porcelain crown is attached. As a complete unit, the dental implant performs, feels, and looks just like a natural tooth.
