Jun 24, 2014 /prREACH/ -- Accent on Seniors, Inc., a leading senior living referral service that helps families find senior living options, today released six new infographics that highlight assisted living options in the rapidly growing aging population in the Golden State and its largest metropolitan areas. The infographics provide specific population and senior community data for Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Sacramento, as well as California as a whole.
Each graphic describes an aspect of the exploding aging population, sometimes referred to as the “senior tsunami”, according to census projections and the available assisted living options including in-home care, adult day care centers, board & care homes, and memory care communities. The six infographics highlight the rapidly graying population by age, gender, location, rate of growth and begs the question, “Are we ready to provide the care so many will need?” The data illustrates the escalating costs across the full continuum of care from adult day care centers to nursing home care. Projections for the growth of the aging population through 2040 in the targeted metropolitan areas predict that emerging issues such as insufficient capacity at senior communities and number of caregivers will become critical issues facing families, as well as and society as a whole.
“With the largest population of seniors in the nation, finding the proper care options for a loved one in California can be a difficult task and will only become more difficult in the years to come,” said Djena Graves Lennix, President of Accent on Seniors and Certified Senior Advisor (CSA)® . “These infographics show the options that both seniors and their families have, and provide them with the opportunity to plan well in advance.”
Currently, 11% of California’s population consists of senior citizens over the age of 65; by 2040, that number will nearly double to 21%, with the fastest growth portion of that growth being seniors over the age of 85. According to Mrs. Graves Lennix, “California is a microcosm of what we can expect nationally for a national senior tsunami.” She continued, “The cost of senior care, whether in or out of the home, will likely skyrocket as demand far outweighs supply. Families need to plan for the extent and type of care required, as well as their as for long term financial and physical health.”
As the infographics demonstrate, there are a variety of living options available to seniors including adult day care centers, in home care, assisted living facilities, board & care homes, Alzheimer’s/dementia care communities and skilled nursing homes. Accent on Seniors helps families determine which environment is right for their loved one and provides options which meet their individual budgetary, location, lifestyle and care needs.
