Houston, Texas, Aug 09, 2021 /prREACH/ -- Gout and You is pleased to announce that its latest helpful article for people with gout is live on its website. In this brief article, site owner and founder Spiro Koulouris explains the correlation between gout and coffee. Having gout himself for a decade, Koulouris talks about recent studies discovering the benefits of including coffee in a gout diet.
The article is currently available at https://goutandyou.com/gout-and-coffee/.
Drinking one or two cups of coffee per day is good for people with gout, says Koulouris. He refers to a study published in the Arthritis and Rheumatology medical journal that found the risk of developing gout is lower for men over the age of 40 who drink coffee regularly. The same study also discovered that compared to men who never drank coffee, the risk of gout is 40% lower for men who drank four to five cups a day and 59% lower for men who drank six or more cups a day.
Per the study, coffee's benefits for people with gout may come from methylxanthine. Methylxanthine is capable of blocking the metabolization of purines, a source of uric acid. Coffee also contains polyphenol, chlorogenic acid, which may reduce insulin sensitivity. Decreasing the body’s insulin sensitivity results in better uric acid elimination.
“Remember that this does not mean that drinking coffee will cure your gout, just that if you drink coffee, then statistically, you may be less likely to get gout. I am not recommending you drink four or more cups of coffee a day because men more than women may experience side effects of heavy caffeine intake, including insomnia, fast heartbeat, muscle tremors and nervousness. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, reduce your coffee consumption or caffeine from other sources,” Spiro Koulouris mentions.
