summary

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a complex carbohydrate molecule with a gel-like consistency capable of holding as much water as 1000 times its dry weight. This makes it a superior moisturizer for the treatment of dry and scaly skin such as that caused by atopic dermatitis (eczema) and for aging skin, as the production of hyaluronic acid decreases as the body ages. Snail secretions are a natural source of hyaluronic acid and other biological molecules. When applied on the skin they help it function much better and vastly improve its hydration and quality. Aug 30, 2014 /prREACH/ -- Hyaluronic acid got the attention of the press when scientists explained why people in their 80's and 90's living in a village in Japan had smooth wrinkle free skin, flexible joints, full hair and activity levels that defied their advanced age. It was the diet mainly on fermented forms of soy in miso paste and tofu with oestrogen-like molecules that send signals to fibroblasts cells to make more hyaluronic acid.

One third of the 15 grams of hyaluronic acid the body contains is degraded and synthesized on a daily basis. Almost half of the body's HA is located in the collagen fibers of skin and while collagen gives the skin its firmness the HA nourishes, hydrates and keeps the collagen elastic. Hyaluronic acid is the only biological molecule capable of retaining so much water: over 1000 times its dry weight in the skin and this is what makes the skin able to withstand pressure and stretching. A higher content of HA in the skin results in smoothness, softening and less wrinkles.

Hyaluronic acid is as important as collagen is for the healthy of the skin. The most common application for hyaluronic acid is in anti-aging skin care, particularly with cosmetic injections and other procedures for the attenuation of skin imperfections and wrinkles, but since HA is destroyed by the body, they need to be repeated regularly and are often expensive.

There are many benefits apart from hydrating the skin with the use of hyaluronic acid and these include faster wound healing, increased energy, and improved strength of muscles. For skin hydration there are many skin care products some better than others. For the other benefits there are supplements that contribute to replenish hyaluronic acid in the body.

Applying products with snail secretions on the skin helps to maintain the necessary levels of hydration in the skin. But snail secretions also supply other nutrients to the skin such as powerful antioxidants and molecules that help in the orchestration of healthy skin regeneration.

Scientific research has shown they activate aging fibroblasts. Those are specialized cells located in the junction between the epidermis and dermis. They are responsible for the production of all the structural elements of the skin matrix, including hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastic fibers.

Independent clinical evidence published in Korea shows snail secretions work very well for atopic dermatitis. While studies done by Andes Natural, the company that makes natural skin care products based on snail secretions in the US, have tested them and found beneficial for many skin concerns, such as acne, scars, rosacea, dermatitis, keratosis pilaris, and aging skin and wrinkles, to name a few.
