Apr 20, 2015 /prREACH/ -- Capitola, CA, — March 14, 2015 — Dr. Vivian Chan, co-owner of North Coast Orthodontics is committed to supporting women’s orthodontic research to effectively treat and educate patients. Dr. Chan’s dedication to advancing the science of orthodontics was developed when she wrote her thesis, “The Role of Female Reproductive Hormones in the Etiopathogenesis of Temporomandibular Joint Disease in Women,” which was presented at the American Association of Orthodontists International Conference in 2007. Her thesis offered valuable insight as to why TMJ disorders are twice as common in women as in men and primarily affect women during their reproductive years.
“I realized from an early stage in my career the importance of evidence-based research to effectively treat and educate patients,” stated Dr. Chan. “I also support and encourage women seeking to make an impact in this field of research.”
Even before her entry into the dental field, Dr. Chan had already completed a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Calgary and a Master of Science degree in Neuroscience from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.
At New York University, Dr. Chan graduated at the top of her class where she was inducted into a national dental honor society and awarded a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Subsequently, she moved to Ann Arbor, where she received her Master of Science from the world-renowned Department of Orthodontics at the University of Michigan.
“As an orthodontist I am committed to delivering compassionate, effective orthodontic care that enhances patients’ oral health and creates beautiful smiles,” stated Dr. Chan.
Dr. Chan is devoted to furthering her expertise in orthodontics. She attends continuing education seminars and hosts courses on a variety of topics related to treatment timing in orthodontics, Invisalign and inter-disciplinary orthodontic treatment.

A native of Calgary, Alberta, Dr. Chan received her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Calgary, and then completed a Master of Science degree in neuroscience. At New York University, Dr. Chan graduated at the top of her class where she was inducted into a national dental honor society and awarded a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Subsequently, she received her Master of Science from the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Michigan. She has also been the recipient of numerous prestigious scholarships and awards.
