Singer-songwriter Larry White on Giving Back Larry White has long been recognized as one of the top talents in the music business––arranging, conducting, and performing for film, TV, Broadway, and the recording industry. Working along with people such as Johnny Mathis, Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, Nancy Wilson, and Engelbert Humperdink,Celine Dion and many more, Larry witnessed that previous generations of musicians set the goal to be as good as you could be at your craft.
“I’ve been so fortunate to work with the best in the business, and because I’ve been so privileged to work with many wonderful people, I wanted to give back and share what I learned, ” he explains.
One of the biggest life lessons Larry White likes to invoke upon his students is that: “Stardom is not the goal. The goal is to be the best you can be at what you do and the rest will come.” This is what he has been instilling in his students for a decade, many who have gone onto perform on The Voice and American Idol. Ironically, the shared benefit of teaching is that the teacher often learns as well.
Many of his students opened his world to the music of Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, One Direction, Bruno Mars, and others. He now infuses his own style, which he describes as jazz fusion, into many of their songs during performances in and around San Diego, including at the Downtown and La Jolla venues for Eddie V’s.
The Larry White Band also performs original music composed by Larry, with lyrics written by his wife, Margaret. Larry confesses that he learns something new every time he sits down at the piano––even after decades of success in the music industry. That’s what he wishes to instill in every one of his students. The practice is what counts the most.
In addition to being a mentor to his private students, Larry is giving back at an event sponsored by he and his wife Margaret––Starts Align Protégé’s on July 15th. Proceeds from the event will provide scholarships to members of ARTS (A Reason to Survive), a National City-based organization which believes in the power of the arts and creativity to literally transform lives – especially those of kids. And once the event is over, Larry expects to be providing personal direction to the young, aspiring musicians who attend the center. Larry also has a long-time association with Jennifer Paterson and California Music Studios, the best music school on the West Coast.
The Stars Align Protégé’s evening begins with an Art Event, showcasing area artists from 4 to 7 p.m. The show is curated and directed by area sculptor and painter Patricia Palenschat. The Peter Marin Quartet will provide the entertainment as well. Then Larry’s protégés take the stage at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Garfield Theater at the JCC in La Jolla.
