Zofran Lawsuits Seek Damages For Twelve Birth Defects

GlaxoSmithKline’s Zofran, which is FDA approved to treat severe nausea and vomiting only in cancer patients and those undergoing surgical anesthesia, has also become a leading treatment for morning sickness, despite the fact that its effects during pregnancy have never been adequately studied. Four lawsuits have now been filed, claiming that Zofran has the potential to cause birth defects and that GlaxoSmithKline was aware of the drug’s potential dangers but marketed it to pregnant women’s physicians anyway. Four Lawsuits Claim That Child Birth Defects Were Caused By Zofran

Four families have now filed lawsuits against GlaxoSmithKline, alleging that the pharmaceutical giant’s anti-nausea drug Zofran caused their children’s debilitating birth defects. While Zofran is FDA approved to treat nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing cancer treatments and surgical anesthesia, it has never been approved for morning sickness. In their complaints, plaintiffs claim that GlaxoSmithKline not only failed to test Zofran’s effects on fetal development, but may in fact have known of the drug’s significant health risks and failed to warn the public.
